Kidney racket: Amit Kumar’s brother held

Devesh K. Pandey

NEW DELHI: Jeevan Kumar, brother of the prime accused in the kidney transplant racket Amit Kumar, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation here on Sunday.

It is learnt that Jeevan appeared before the CBI officials, following which he was taken into custody.

However, the investigating agency claimed that the accused was tracked down to Lodhi Road here from where he was picked up. The CBI will produce Jeevan in a court on Monday.

“He is a prize catch as he is suspected to be an equal partner in the crime along with his brother. We will get valuable information about the racket from him. Through his disclosures, we can also check the veracity of the revelations made by Amit,” said a CBI official. Jeevan, Dr. Kumar and their accomplices were arrested in a similar case registered at the Nizamuddin railway police station here in 2000.

Jeevan and Dr. Kumar went missing from Gurgaon after the Moradabad police raided their clandestine operation theatre on January 24.

Subsequently, Interpol issued a Red Corner notice against them. Earlier, Jeevan’s wife Pooja was arrested by the Gurgaon police on the charge of receiving money from the kidney recipients on his and his brother’s behalf.
