BELLARY: A variety of attractive roses, colourful marigold and lotus and tastefully set vegetable carvings attracted a large number of people at the three-day fruits and flower exhibition organised at the taluk office compound here by the Department of Horticulture.

This is for the first time in perhaps two decades that a horticulture exhibition has been organised in Bellary. As a sequel to the good response, the department has decided to extend the exhibition by another day (up to Tuesday), C. Ramachandra, Deputy Director of Horticulture, told The Hindu here on Monday. Fig, banana, pomegranate, mango, sapota, papaya, lemon and water melon among fruits, carrot, radish, brinjal, chilli, tomato, onions, and pumpkin. There were stalls about the farm mechanisation and on equipment, including drip irrigation, vermin compost and so on.

As many as 225 horticulturists from all the seven taluks of the district participated. The main objective of organising the exhibition, according to Mr. Ramachandra, was to educate farmers about the advantages of taking up horticulture and the benefits they would get under the National Horticultural Mission.

Another major attraction at the exhibition was about explaining the advantages of drinking the vegetable juices to stay healthy.

Basavaraj from Hubli demonstrated the extraction of juice from various vegetables.

The cultural entertainment programmes organised in the evenings, including a mimicry show by well-known artiste and film actor Kogli Kotresh was well attended.
