dated February 19, 1958: Tunisian issue

France and Tunisia on February 17 accepted British and American offers of “good offices” in the quarrel started by the French bombing of a Tunisian border village nine days ago, according to French sources. Tunisia has also agreed in principle to allow supplies to the 15,000 French troops blockaded in their camps. The Tunisian Foreign Minister Mr. Sadok Mokkadeh said that if France accepted the Anglo-American approaches, Tunisia would probably ask for adjournment of the Security Council debate due to begin on February 18. The French are now discussing with British and American diplomats what questions shall be covered by their mediation.
