Good turnout at army recruitment rally

Special Correspondent

About 1,000 candidates turn up

Rally held to fill up the post of soldier (technical)

Common written entrance exam in Chennai on February 24

VELLORE: About 1,000 candidates from Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Truvallur and Chennai districts, and the Union Territory of Puducherry turned up at the two-day army recruitment rally organised by the Army Recruiting Office, Chennai here on Monday. It was held for recruitment to the post of soldier (technical).

Since candidates with a minimum height of 165 cm alone were eligible, the height of the candidates was first checked immediately on their arrival at 5 a.m. About 400 candidates, who did not qualify in the preliminary height test, were rejected, and the documents of the remaining 600 candidates were verified by officials from the Chennai Army Recruiting Office.

K. Haridas, Director (Recruiting), Army Recruiting Office, Chennai told The Hindu that those who had a minimum qualification of a pass in class XII (with English, physics, chemistry and mathematics as compulsory subjects), with a minimum of 40 per cent marks in each subject were eligible for the next stage of the selection process — the physical efficiency tests to be conducted at 5 a.m. on Tuesday. Industrial Training Institute (ITI) certificate-holders and diploma holders would be eligible only if they had passed the class XII examination.

Col. Haridas said that the physical tests would comprise 1.6-km run, pull-ups, jumping over a 9-foot-long ditch and zigzag balance. The physical measurements would be taken only for candidates who pass the physical efficiency tests.

The candidates are expected to have a minimum weight of 50 kg and minimum chest measurement of 77-82 cm. Candidates who clear both the physical efficiency and measurement tests would be qualified for the medical tests to be conducted at the recruiting office in Chennai from Wednesday onwards. Those who qualified in the medical examination would be required to appear for the common (written) entrance examination, which would be held in Chennai office on February 24. Those who did not qualify in the initial medical tests would be given sufficient time to qualify themselves and appear for the common entrance examination to be held on April 27.

The director (recruiting) said that the written examination would comprise two parts. The first part (one-and-a-half hours) would have questions relating to current affairs, general knowledge and elementary maths, while the second part (one hour) would have advanced questions in maths based on class XII syllabus. Those who pass the entrance examination would be selected on merit. Replying to a question, he declined any knowledge about the number of vacancies for which the recruitment is to be made. Those who get full marks in the physical efficiency tests and good marks in the entrance examination have a fair chance of recruitment, he said.

Col. Haridas said the Vellore district administration, the police and the Assistant Director of Ex-Servicemen’s Welfare, Vellore, Prakasam were extending their full cooperation in conducting the recruitment rally.
