J. Venkatesan
NEW DELHI: The founder leader of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), S. Ramadoss, indicated over the weekend that a research centre for Tamil traditional music would be launched soon.
Dr. Ramadoss gave this assurance in response to a request made by Delhi Tamil Sangam president M. N. Krishnamani to set up a research centre for undertaking an in-depth study of various aspects of Tamil hymns, compositions and ragas.
Dr. Ramadoss, who presided over a day-long traditional Tamil music festival, also assured the Sangam that he would take up its request for shifting the Tiruvalluvar statue installed at R. K. Puram to the Sangam premises.
Law Commission Chairman A. R. Lakshmanan, who inaugurated the festival, explained the significance of Tamil music sung at various temples. Eminent musicians from Tamil Nadu rendered the hymns of Gnanasambandar, Appar, Sundarar; Divya Prabandam, Thiruppugzh, Islamic and Christian songs and songs of poets Bharathiar and Bharathidasan.
