KOCHI: Government contractors will be forced to abandon contract works if the State government fails to arrest the price rise of steel, cement and tar, the Kerala Government Contractors’ Association has said. The government decision imposing a ban on collection of gravel, red earth and river sand has also worsened the situation, the association said here on Monday. The price rise and the shortage of construction materials will also result in cost escalation for various projects, said president of the association Varghese Kannampally. Seeks compensationAs the cost of construction materials has shot up, the government should compensate the loss sustained by the contractors engaged in the construction work of various departments. The government should also come forward to import cement, steel and tar for controlling the prise rise, he demanded. The association will submit a representation to the Chief Minister on March 1 highlighting the issues faced by the contractors.
