Letters to the Editor
As one solely responsible for large-scale commotion in Maharashtra, MNS leader Raj Thackeray should not have been released on bail soon after his arrest. The Vilasrao Deshmukh government’s act of arresting him was an eyewash. Creation of unrest over a regional issue is uncalled for and should be nipped in the bud. The need of the hour is stringent action against all those who were responsible for instigating and perpetrating the attacks against north Indians in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra. R. Anjan Kumar, Brussels There is an underlying lesson in the Mumbai violence and its fallout. The root cause is no different from the one that forms the basis of the vexed reservation issue. Economic disparity among sections of people, region-wise, religion-wise, or caste-wise in a large and growing country cannot be corrected overnight by political agitations, migration restrictions, legislative preferences and quotas. Such remedies, however tempting to the politician, will be counter-productive for the country. Equality of educational and employment opportunity for all citizens, regardless of region, religion, caste or class, and truly secular policies in all spheres will ensure growth, justice and welfare. T.P. Subramonian, Cupertino, California
