Corrections and clarifications

* In connection with a report “Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor to be ready by 2010” (February 16, 2008), Dr. P.R.Vasudeva Rao, Director, Chemistry Group, IGCAR, Kalpakkam, clarifies that it gives the wrong impression that the IGCAR [Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research] is responsible for construction of the PFBR [Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor] and the next four FBRs [Fast Breed Reactor]. The PFBR is being constructed at Kalpakkam (not at the IGCAR site) by BHAVINI, a public sector undertaking under the administrative control of the Department of Atomic Energy. It is not a commercial venture by the IGCAR, as stated. The Department of Atomic Energy plans to construct four more 500 MWe fast breeder reactors (not PFBRs) to be ready by 2020, but only two of these will be at Kalpakkam. The site for the other two is yet to be finalised. (The report was based on an interaction with Dr. Rao.)

* The heading of a report was “Anti-material rifle handed over to BSF [Border Security Force]” (February 15, 2008). It should have been “Anti-materiel”. The OED says that “materiel” pertains to military materials and equipment. Its origin is early 19th Century from the French materiel.

* The fourth paragraph in a report “Consider biosafety for fresh approval to GM products: court” (February 14, 2008) was: “After heated exchanges, the Bench brushed aside the opposition and concern expressed by counsel Prashant Bhushan and Sanjay Parikh over granting blanket approvals by the GEAC [Genetic Engineering Approval Committee] ….” Mr. Parikh was appearing as counsel for Gene Campaign in the connected petition and the “heated exchanges” referred to in the report is not in relation to him. (A report on what transpired during the “heated exchanges” appeared in the accompanying box item “Counsel says ‘sorry’ for losing temper”.)
