FOR A CAUSE: CPI (M) activists staging a demonstration in Cuddalore against hike in petroleum prices, on Monday.

CUDDALORE: The activist of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged demonstrations at 10 places in Cuddalore district on Monday, protesting the hike in petroleum prices. They raised slogans against the Centre’s action.

The speakers stated that before the price-hike the Left parties had suggested the Centre to cut down the Customs and Excise duty on petroleum products to rein in the prices. However, ignoring the advice, the Centre had found recourse to increasing the prices — Rs 2 a litre for petrol and Re 1 a litre for diesel. Already, the people were burdened by escalating prices of essential commodities and the recent increase in fuel prices, though said to be modest, would further contribute to inflation.

Therefore, they urged the Centre to roll back the price hike and contain the inflationary trend. The demonstrations were held at Cuddalore Old Town, Chidambaram, Panruti, Vriddhachalam, Pennadam, Kattumannarkoil, Nellikuppam, Bhuvanagiri, Vadalur, and Kumaratchi.

Those who participated in the stir included S.Dhanasekaran, district secretary, Musa, State committee member and other functionaries such as G.Madhavan, T.Ravindran, A.Chandrasekaran and M.Narayanan.
