PUDUCHERRY: Pre-primary school teachers in the Union Territory began a relay fast on Monday, demanding regularisation of jobs. The teachers were appointed on consolidate basis two years ago, they said.

According to P. Rukmini, joint president of Puducherry Pre-Primary School Teachers Association, the Education Department had appointed 158 pre-primary school teachers in 160 government schools in Puducherry and Karaikal to teach LKG and UKG classes in 2006. A minimum qualification of a pass in standard X examination and training in early childhood care and education was fixed as eligibility then, she said.

“Most of us are degree holders and have completed B.Ed too. Our salary is Rs. 2,500 right from our appointment and we have been asking the government to regularise our jobs for a long time now,” she added. The teachers had observed a dawn-to-dusk fast on February 1, she recalled.

“We have not received our salaries for the last six months. It is extremely difficult for teachers working in Karaikal as they have to manage the expenses for stay and travel,” she said.

Despite several representations, the department has not paid heed to their demands till now, G. Sudha, president of the association said, adding that they would go on an indefinite fast from February 20.

“We will receive Rs. 7,000 as salary if our jobs are regularised,” she said.
