Congress objects to Mayor’s participation in BJP rally

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Describing the post of Mayor as a “Constitutional one above petty party politics”, senior Congress members in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Monday took strong exception to Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra’s participation in a Bharatiya Janata Party rally on Saturday and demanded her resignation.

At a special meeting of the MCD House, Leader of the Opposition J. K. Sharma said the Mayor had disgraced the sanctity of her post.

According to former Delhi Mayor Farhad Suri: “The post of Mayor has certain limitations and some decorum has to be maintained. The post is above party politics and this is the first time that a mayor has exhibited such blatant party affiliations.”
