DEHRA DUN: Several hapless residents of Lakhibagh area here were pulled out of their homes and allegedly beaten up by the police after a clash between workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress over sticking of posters on Sunday night. It all started when some persons tried to stick a poster of the Congress candidate for the Pauri Lok Sabha by-election, Satpal Maharaj, on the walls of a house. This was objected to by the residents apparently loyal to the BJP nominee, T.P.S. Rawat. Soon a scuffle took place between the two groups. Some miscreants shattered the panes of a police vehicle and hurled stones at the cops injuring some of them. This was followed by lathi-charge and several people were pulled out of their houses and roughed up. Although the BJP and Congress have asked their workers to exercise restraint, both parties have condemned the police action. The Congress has given a memorandum seeking a judicial enquiry into the lathi-charge and approached the Election Commission to ensure free and fair elections, the Congress spokesperson, Surendra Kumar said.
