Grand welcome: Kashiram Rana, convener, Parliament Sub-Committee on Commerce, being received by knitwear exporters in Tirupur on Monday. — TIRUPUR: The sub-committee on Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce has said that it would recommend measures to mitigate the suffering faced by exporting community and suggest ways to expedite growth in export front. The panel led by Kashiram Rana and comprising E. Ponnusamy, Thennala G. Balakrishna Pillai, Nikilanda Sir and Banwarilal Kanchchal, interacted with knitwear exporters of Tirupur on Monday. Explaining the difficulties faced by exporters in the wake of rupee appreciation against US dollar, Tirupur Exporters Association president A. Sakthivel said that over 8,000 workers had already lost jobs in garment units here. He said the knitwear exports from Tirupur was declining for the first time in the last 20 years. He urged the Centre to increase duty drawback rates by 4 more percentage to overcome losses. Mr. Sakthivel asked the committee to take steps to widen Tirupur-Tuticorin and Sengapalli-Kochi roads. He also wanted construction of budget houses for workers in Tirupur besides grant for marine discharge project to let off textile effluents. Mr. Rana said that they would try to help the exporters to overcome the problems. He said that the Centre was keen on increasing exports by creating adequate infrastructure. The committee would take up the issues with the Government.
