THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Intelligence Wing of the Commercial Taxes Department has detected the tax evasion in areca trade by three hill produce dealers of Thrissur and Palakkad districts. Finance Minister T.M.Thomas Issac said here on Monday that Central sales tax had to be remitted in advance in the State for out of State sale of arecanuts. It should be remitted in the tax office concerned and entered in the delivery note, which should be produced at the check post. The delivery note should be sent to the authorities concerned. These dealers managed to get bogus certification done on the delivery note without paying the tax in advance. Some employees of the Muthanga check post were found to be helping them in the tax evasion. They did it by not entering the details of the goods that crossed the border in the register and by not forwarding the delivery note. Babu Thomas, Check Post Inspector, and David Benny, Clerk had been placed under suspension pending inquiry. The government had also decided to entrust the Vigilance Department with the inquiry of the case.
