Making a point: The former MLA Araga Jnanendra speaking at a convention of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes organised by the BJP at Tirthahalli in Shimoga district on Monday. TIRTHAHALLI: The former BJP MLA Araga Jnanendra on Monday alleged that the Congress, which exploited the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes as its vote bank, never showed any interest in bring them to the national mainstream. Inaugurating a convention of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes organised by the BJP, he said that it was unfortunate that the socio-economic condition of the people from these communities worsened during the Congress regime. He said the policies and programmes initiated by the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre under the leadership of the former Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee for the benefit of these communities were discontinued by the Congress-led UPA Government. He urged the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes not to fall prey to the machinations by the Congress. He appealed them to support the BJP. Mr. Jnanendra felicitated the elected SC and ST members of the gram, taluk, and town panchayats. The president of the taluk panchayat, Revathi Ananthamurthy, presided over the function. Lakshmi Venkatappa, C.B. Eshwar, and Sarekoppa Ramachandra were present. Srinivas welcomed the gathering. Hema proposed a vote of thanks.
