BANGALORE: Why bother to skip school to watch a movie when your school itself takes you out for a film festival? Students, who packed the Ambedkar Bhavan auditorium, were more than happy to be away from their classes, cheering as the Children’s Film Festival of India -2008 was inaugurated here on Monday. In a star-studded inaugural event, where Kannada film stars such as Upendra and Puneeth Rajkumar spoke and interacted with their little but large fan following, the four-day festival was kick-started. The festival is simultaneously being held in Mangalore, Hassan and Davangere. The film festival was inaugurated by K.V.R. Tagore, Commissioner Information Department, and Thallam Nanjunda Shetty, President of Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce. Speaking at the occasion Mr. Tagore said: “The Government is committed to promoting children’s films and will work towards screening such films in all districts from June 1.” He appealed to other film directors to not think of profits only and make films for children. Children from about 12 schools attended the film festival which is scheduled to screen 12 movies from different parts of the country. Overjoyed at being able to meet their favourite filmstars Upendra and Puneeth, they cheered along. Upendra who is the brand ambassador of the festival was very popular with the audience with his dialogue delivery and antics. Puneeth, who was himself a child actor, spoke about his support for children’s films.
