TIURCHI: Preparation for speech is as much important as delivering it. But learning the ropes of collecting information would be child’s play, which the class VIII students of Kendriya Vidyalaya – 2 learnt better at NIE session on Public Speaking skills.

The third module in the theme, ‘Collecting and organising information’ taught the students on preparing a speech. Resource person M. Neelayadakshi grilled the point into the minds of students by conducting a host of activities. Dividing the class into groups, she assigned each one with topics. Armed with newspapers, the students surfed for information. Familiar topics excited them, as quite a few pitched in their ideas on the subject.

Commending contributors to the scripts, Ms. Neelayadakshi asked them on the source of information, which ranged from newspapers to television. “All information cannot be gathered on a single day. It requires persistence and hard work to draw from various sources.”

Most of the speeches fall into two major categories – ‘pyramid’ and ‘inverted triangle.’ While pyramid contains the background of the speech first, followed by content and then moral, inverted triangle carry the order in reverse. The latter, she said, was quite in custom in news writing.

Asking right type of questions is crucial in collecting relevant information. The speakers must also look into all possible questions that might crop up during the speech. The collected materials should be sequenced to strengthen the speech, Ms. Neelayadakshi concluded.
