TAMBARAM: The National Institute of Siddha (NIS) is waiting for the State Government to allot five acres of land to set up a pharmacy and a drug testing laboratory, said Shiv Basanth, Joint Secretary to the Department of Ayush, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Talking to The Hindu during his recent visit to the Institute in Tambaram Sanatorium, Mr. Basanth said the pharmacy and the drug testing laboratory were among the long-term plans made by the Ministry when the Institute was inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in September 2005.

He was at the Institute to participate in the ‘Brain Storming Session on Bird Flu.’

Once the five-acre land was acquired, work on creating facilities would begin. Another task ahead for the Ministry was to computerise the records of all patients visiting the NIS for creating a database and for easy administration.

The proposed computerisation would also provide instant access to the medical history of the patient, Mr. Basanth said.

Filling up of the vacancies for some posts had also to be taken up and with the completion of some additional works, the Institute would emerge as a leading centre for clinical drug trials and high-end research and development destination.

Already, it offered postgraduate programme in Siddha medicine with quality training to students.

Mr. Basanth went around the facilities at NIS and said that the Institute was guided by a good team of administrators.
