One hut burnt partially, two others damaged

Simmering tension in the area for nearly a fortnight

UDUMALPET: More than 13 Dalits, including aged women, were attacked by a mob at Salarapatty, 8 km from here, on Monday.

One hut was burnt partially and two other huts were damaged in the attacks.

There was a simmering tension in the area for nearly a fortnight. Violence broke out hours after Dalits owing allegiance to Adhi Thamilar Peravai staged a demonstration and road blockade in Udumalpet protesting against the alleged economic blockade by some section of villagers in Salarapatty.

Around 4 p.m. two Dalit youths were thrashed by a group on a road near a temple. The mob then went on the rampage in the Dalit hamlet.

Policemen overpowered

Udumalpet Deputy Superintendent of Police S. Eswaran, who was on the spot, said around 20 police personnel were overpowered by a mob of over 100 people.

He said 12 persons were injured in the clash. Coimbatore DIG Seema Agrawal and SP G. Karthikeyan rushed to the spot.
