Own building for Dindigul library

THENI: Own building for the central library in Dindigul would be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs.52 lakh. Foundation stone would be laid soon, said Thangam Thennarasu, Minister for School Education.

He was delivering a special address after inaugurating a new building for the central library at a cost of Rs.64 lakh and 18 rural libraries in Theni and 11 rural libraries each in Madurai and Dindigul districts here on Sunday.

Work on construction of new building for branch library at Uppukottai and T. Sinthalaiserry in Theni district, Pazhanganantham, Kallikudi, Kottampatti, Saptur, Thiruvallvar Nagar and Thenur in Madurai district and branch library at Thadikombu and rural libraries at Kasipalayam, Sempatti, Mavuthanpatti, M. Vadipatti and Chennamanaickenpatti was in progress, he said.

Massive efforts were on to establish a library in all village panchayats under the New Anna Renaissance scheme, he added. “Libraries are essential to create a new society.” The Department of Libraries had received land worth Rs.1.98 crore, equipment worth Rs.18.5 lakh, 58 lakh books and cash donation Rs.35.81 lakh from donors in three districts to develop libraries. Class room library scheme had been introduced in 124 schools in Theni, 141 in Madurai 131 in Dindigul districts.

To begin with, 11 libraries in three districts were hooked on with internet. Following change in working hours, seven branch libraries in Theni, 12 in Madurai and six in Dindigul had been functioning between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
