Madurai official convicted

MADURAI: A magistrate court on Monday convicted M. Jayalakshmi, Protection Officer/District Social Welfare Officer, Madurai, under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, for not filing a ‘Domestic Incident Report’ within the stipulated time.

Magistrate E. Ranjendra Kannan court imposed a penalty of Rs.50 and in default two days of simple imprisonment for not filing the report required for disposing of a case within the mandatory 60 days.

According to the prosecution, the court took cognizance of a complaint filed by P. Shanmugavalli of Nagamalai Pudukottai, accusing her husband and parents in-law of harassing her on December 12. The PO was directed to inquire and file the DIR.

Despite reminders, she did not submit the report.
