NEW DELHI: A criminal allegedly involved in 70 cases of murder, attempt-to-murder and robbery and carrying a reward of Rs.50,000 on his head has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police. The police claim to have seized a country-made firearm and two live cartridges from him.

The Special Cell recently received a tip-off that Joginder Singh, also wanted by the Uttar Pradesh police, would go to Sarai Kale Khan in the Capital on February 16 evening. A team under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police L. N. Rao laid a trap and intercepted the accused, at which he allegedly opened fire. However, he was overpowered and the firearm was seized.

During interrogation, Joginder allegedly disclosed that he was initiated into the world of crime in late 1990s when he tried to kill a doctor at Sultanpuri over a trivial issue. He was arrested and sent to jail where he came in touch with the members of Birju and Bhoori gang. He was released after four months, following which he allegedly formed a gang along with his cousin Ajay and other employees.

According to the police, the gang comprising Surender Boka, Pradeep Bawla, Omi Tyagi, Jagdish Sharma, Hanumant Sharma and Punnu, Asgar, Dilshad, Ibrahim Baddu, Imran Kheer and Salim Roti committed several robberies in the National Capital Region. Joginder was arrested in 2001 and then in 2002, after which he was sentenced to five years’ rigorous imprisonment.

Joginder was wanted in a case at Jyotiba Phule Nagar in UP in which he and his accomplices allegedly trailed in a businessman in two vehicles and robbed him of Rs.1.2 crore. The accused also killed the car driver.
