181 public schools served show-cause notices 303 public schools given land at concessional rates NEW DELHI: Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely on Monday said the Delhi Government had taken stern action against public schools which had not admitted children under the 20 per cent quota prescribed for economically weaker sections of society in the past. The Minister said a notification was issued on January 25, 2007, whereby all private recognised unaided schools allotted land by government agencies like the DDA, L&DO and the Delhi Government were mandated to admit children belonging to the economically weaker sections under the 20 per cent free-ship quota. This order was stayed by Delhi High Court on November 19, 2007, and the Court had directed that schools needed to file affidavits and give 15 per cent seats to economically weaker sections under economically weaker sections quota. The Minister said 181 public schools, which had been allotted land by government agencies but had defaulted in admissions during the academic year 2007-08, had been served show-cause notices asking them to explain why they should not be de-recognised. He said there were 303 public schools, including the 181 defaulting schools, which had been given land by the government agencies at concessional rates for setting up of schools. These schools had admitted 7,543 children in nursery class during 2007-08 which was 12.5 per cent of the total admissions made by these schools.
