Revision of voters’ list completed

Staff Reporter

Draft electoral roll has 39.13 lakh voters

Over 3,400 officials conducted house-to-house survey

Names of 4.78 lakh voters have been deleted

BANGALORE: The revised draft electoral roll comprising 39.13 lakh voters in Bangalore Urban district for Assembly constituencies of Yelahanka, Varthur, Anekal and Uttarahalli was notified on Monday after the names of over six lakh voters were deleted from the draft list drawn during November 2007.

The classification of deletions includes repetition of voters, those who have passed away or have shifted from the area. Deputy Commissioner, Bangalore Urban, M.A. Sadiq told presspersons here on Monday that the biggest classification of voters whose names have been deleted are those who have changed their residence.

“The names of 4.78 lakh voters had to be deleted as they had shifted from the areas and 1.01 lakh names have been struck down for repetition while names of 24,064 voters were deleted following their death. It was found that residents in the erstwhile CMC areas changed their residence often leading to repetition. I do not also rule out the possibility of names being added to the list in the past.”

Over 3,400 officials, including booth officers, nodal officers and supervising officers, were a part of the house-to-house survey to identify voters in the Bangalore Urban district after the Election Commission expressed dissatisfaction over the list. In fact, the draft electoral roll published on Monday is the result of fourth such exercise taken up by the district administration during the last four months.

Mr. Sadiq said: “The electoral roll drawn in November 2007 had 40.82 lakh voters in the four Assembly constituencies of which the names of 6.03 lakh have been deleted while 4.3 lakh names have been added bringing the total to 39.13 lakh after modifications.” The draft list has been given to the political parties who number seven in Bangalore Urban district, he added.

Highest and lowest

While the highest electorate per polling area is in Herohalli falling in Uttarahalli constituency with 6,382 voters, the lowest is Sonnenahalli polling area in Yelahanka constituency with 318 voters.

The final publication of the rolls would be notified on March 10 after providing adequate time for filing claims and objections. Public will have time till February 26 to file claims and objections following which claims and objections would be disposed of.
