Bangalore: Transport vehicles from four southern States will not be able enter Karnataka from the midnight of February 22 as the Karnataka High Court has made it clear they also should be fitted with speed governors for entering the State. A decision in this regard has been taken at a joint meeting of the representatives of various transport vehicle operators’ associations from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala held in Bangalore on Monday. Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners’ and Agents Association President G.R. Shanmugappa said in a statement that such decision was inevitable as the owners of transport vehicles from other States were not in a position to install speed governors just for entering Karnataka as there is no such condition to ply there. He said the transport vehicle owners of neighbouring States expressed their inability to fix speed governors as per the deadline (June 30) fixed by the High Court in its order. “However, the representatives of transport vehicle owners have said that they would not disobey the order of the Karnataka High Court and at the same time they are not in a position to fix speed governors and hence not entering Karnataka is the only immediate solution for the crisis,” stated Mr. Shanmugappa. To be hitSuch a decision might affect entry of goods, tourists, etc into Karnataka and that would affect the economy of the State but there was no other way out, he added. The meeting was attended by Vijay Sankeshwar, who owns a transport chain, representatives of maxicabs, oil tanker owners’ association and others, he stated.
