UK stem cell research team in city

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: A team of scientists and experts in life sciences is in India to meet representatives of Indian research and development facilities in public and private institutions. Starting their south Indian tour with a visit to Bangalore, the group is exploring opportunities for commercial collaboration with Indian entities in the field of stem cell technology.

Colin McGuckin, New Castle Centre for Cord at the International Centre for Life, U.K., said, although stem cell research was still in its infancy, British companies were developing global strategies. Stem cells can be harvested from embryos, adults and from cord blood; however, cord blood remains the most important source of stem cells. Prof. Mc Guckin said: “Regulations are necessary and the field should not be open to everyone.”
