Expert warns of computer vision syndrome

Are you among those who spend most of your time in front of a computer screen? Then beware, for you might fall victim to computer vision syndrome (CVS). A seminar held on ‘Computer Related Medical Diseases’ by the Sunrise Hospital at Kakkanad on Monday discussed the causes, symptoms, and the preventive measures for CVS. Gangan Prathap, Vice-Chancellor of the Cochin University of Science and Technology, inaugurated the seminar.

A series of symptoms arising as a result of excessive viewing of visual display terminal or computer screens with practically no attention to visual hygiene leads to CVS, Sandhya Rao, consultant ophthalmologist at the hospital, said.

Among the symptoms are eye strain or tired eyes, sore eyes, red eyes, watering of eyes, blurred vision, headache, dryness and irritation in eyes, sensitivity to light, double vision, difficulty in changing focus, discomfiture while wearing contact lens, she said. She said that it was vital to blink the eyes at frequent intervals, as blinking is reduced by 50 per cent during computer usage. Regular eye examination and using anti-reflective glare coating for the monitors are also recommended.
