VANIYAMBADI: Youth Red Cross Club of Marudhar Kesari Jain College, Vaniyambadi, in association with Tirupattur Government Hospital, organised a blood donation camp on the college campus here on Tuesday. Delivering the presidential address, Prem Kumar, Deputy Director (Health Services), Tirupattur Government Hospital, said that in one year ending February 2008, the Tirupattur hospital had performed 30,000 maternity operations. Out of the total operations performed, the maternal mortality was 20 as against 32 during the corresponding period last year. He said that the main reason for the maternal mortality were blood loss and non availability of timely blood donors. The hospital, in a year, would take steps to bring down the maternal mortality rate to 0.5 per cent. Dr. Kumar said that all the Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in the district were well equipped with latest facilities. Even ultra scanning facilities were available. The PHCs were capable of doing blood sugar test. He also handed over certificate of appreciation to T.S. Krishna, honorary public relations adviser of the college, for donating blood for 45 times. A total of 40 students of the college donated blood at the camp. Kalyanasundaram, Medical Officer, Blood Bank, Tirupattur GH, Deliban, Block Medical Officer, Government PHC, Jolarpet, and Usha Devi, Medical Officer, PHC, Athanavoor, also spoke.
