This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru declared in the Lok Sabha on February 18 that India did not want an inch of territory whether it be from Ceylon or Pakistan, “except, of course, what is ours.” He deplored the formation of a new party in Madras State which had expressed its objective as having an independent Tamil State with Ceylon incorporated in it. Describing such thinking as “feudal” and “absurd” and the talk of those who were sponsoring the party as “nonsensical”, Mr. Nehru declared, “It is to the interests of India that Ceylon should be an independent and friendly country. How does it profit us in any way not only to go against our policies but to be made a laughing stock in the world,” he asked.
