Nagaland polls: 268 candidates in the fray

Iboyaima Laithangbam

IMPHAL: In all 268 candidates are left in the fray for the March 5 elections to the 60-member Nagaland Assembly.

The major players will be the Congress which had 16 MLAs in the House and the Naga People’s Front which had 19 MLAs.

Though the Nagaland Assembly has 60 members, the strength decreased to 42 as several MLAs resigned, allegedly to lobby for ticket of some other parties.

On December 13, 2007, when the then Chief Minister Niphieu Rio faced a no-confidence motion, the Speaker Kiyanielie Peseyie had disallowed some MLAs from voting. He had then declared that Mr. Rio won by 31 votes. Following the controversy, the State was brought under the President’s rule on January 4.

Officials said over 150 additional companies of Central paramilitary forces would be deployed for the elections.
