NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia here will host Pakistani lawyer and human rights activist Asma Jehangir later this week. She is arriving in the Capital to deliver the second “Walter Sisulu Memorial Lecture” on “Honouring the lawyers’ movement in Pakistan” on Thursday. The event is being organised by the Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution. A founding member of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Asma has been the United Nations Special Rapporteur on “Freedom of Religion or Belief” since 2004. She has also served as the UN Special Rapporteur on “Extra-judicial, Arbitrary and Summary Executions”. Upcoming lectureBorn into a family with a history of activism, Ms. Jehangir became involved in protests against the military regime in Pakistan at a young age. The upcoming memorial lecture has been instituted in honour of Walter Max Ulyate Sisulu, the front-ranking South African anti-apartheid activist and a member of the African National Congress. The first Walter Sisulu Memorial Lecture was delivered by Ahmed Mohamed Kathrada, a South African politician who was imprisoned along with Nelson Mandela and was one of the leading lights of the anti-apartheid movement. The centre will also organise a national conference on “Communalism” on Thursday in which leaders from various political parties and experts are expected to take part.
