Returning in a lawyer’s robes

New role: Actor Sudesh Berry will soon be seen in the TV serial ‘Amber Dhara’ on Sony Entertainment Television.

Coming back on the small screen after a long hiatus is the flamboyant actor Sudesh Berry, who is upbeat about his new role that he insists is not a negative one.

As a criminal lawyer, Sudesh is pitted against his own family members who are facing a murder charge in the serial “Amber Dhara” on Sony Entertainment Television. His estranged wife Lata, played by Mona Ambegaonkar, is also a lawyer defend ing her daughters.

Talking about how he took up the role in the soap opera, Sudesh says when he read the script of “Amber Dhara” he realised that the role was a challenging one. “I am a laid-back person, not at all in the rat race or any kind of race to make it to the top. What matters to me is the role and I felt that there was some kind of challenge for me to act as a father who hasn’t lost a single case in his life and is now standing opposite his own daughters in the courtroom,” he explains.

Describing himself as a fastidious person, Sudesh says his last serial was “Suhaag” that was shown way back in 2000. “As I am a choosy person I wasn’t signing any serials but was doing films like ‘Kafila’, ‘Tango Charlie’ and ‘Maa Tujhe Salam’ and also writing a script. As an actor I rely on my intuition,” he says with a smile.

About his new role he says: “I don’t think the role is of a bad guy just because the character has been shown leaving the mother and kids when they were babies. He is a practical man who wants to achieve success at any cost. Every person has situations within his family that make them act like they do and what society perceives as negative might not actually be negative at all. Similarly, here my character had its own reasons for his earlier actions.”

Comfortable part

Sudesh says since he is a garrulous person he was comfortable playing the lawyer’s role. “I have to utter lengthy dialogues for the role. I made my entry into Bollywood with ‘Ghayal’ in 1990 and got blessings from Dharmendra who was the producer. I believe in healthy competition. I have done amateur theatre for ten years but not of the level of Naseeruddin Shah with whom I share my birthday!” he adds.
