PUDUCHERRY: With the assistance of a large posse of policemen, the Oulgaret Municipality on Tuesday commenced the construction work to link two streets in a residential area at Reddiyarpalayam. The construction work to link the Third and Fourth Cross in Friend’s Nagar, which was aborted last year owing to opposition from a group, was taken up after deploying around 50 policemen, under the supervision of Superintendent of Police (South) A. Kandanathan. In September 2007, when municipal officials attempted to lay the road to link the two streets, a group of men owing allegiance to an anti-social prevented them from carrying out the work. The group raised protest and argued that a portion of the area where the road was being laid belonged to the leader of the group. Following the opposition, a survey of land records was conducted to ascertain the claim made by the group, which, in turn, found it fake, the officials said. Fake documentsThe group had obtained false documents and encroached upon the land owned by the municipality, the officials added. They said that police protection was sought as the group threatened the workers from carrying out the work.
