PUDUCHERRY: The Pondicherry Medical Colleges Students Parents Association has urged the territorial administration to take immediate steps to complete the construction work of the Government Medical College before the next academic year. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, president of the association A. Gabriel said the delay in the construction work would scuttle the chances of students belonging to economically weaker section in getting a medical seat. “There are a number of medical colleges in Puducherry. We want the government to provide proper infrastructure in this new college,” Mr. Gabriel said. The association urged the government to provide free education to poor students in the proposed medical college. The government had announced financial assistance for students of professional courses, including medicine and engineering, under the Perunthalaivar Kamaraj financial assistance scheme, Mr. Gabriel said. The funds should be given according to the duration of the courses, but he said the government was yet to refund the fees for the fifth year for MBBS students. “Students who joined the MBBS in 2002-2003 had paid tuition fees for five years but have not received the funds for the fifth year. When we met the officials, they said the provisions in the Government Order allowed disbursement of funds only for four years. It is possible only if the order is amended,” he pointed out.
