News Analysis
* The strapline of a report “Preserve natural resources for progress: Pachauri” (Chennai city, February 17, 2008, page 2) was: “Nobel laureate addresses Young Indians National Summit”, while the text said “R.K. Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and director-general of The Energy and Resources Institute … was addressing students and young professionals at the fourth Young Indians National Summit with the theme ‘Wake up India.’ Mr. Pachauri, who was in New Delhi, interacted with students through videoconference.” There were a few queries on whether the term a Nobel Laureate was correct. Merci Olsson, Marketing and Communications Manager, Nobelprize.org, Sweden (the official web site of the Nobel Foundation) clarifies that the recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and not R.K. Pachauri. Mr. Pachauri participated in the award ceremony as a chairman of the IPCC. (The 2007 Peace Nobel was also shared by Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr.) * A promo titled “Calling it a day” (“Newscape” page, February 16, 2008) said: “A driver who took her work rules very seriously abandoned a bus full of former prisoners along a highway because her hours for the day were over.” There were a few queries on where the incident took place. It was in Corsicana, Texas. The 40 passengers, who had been paroled or released from the state prison in Huntsville, were aboard a charter bus to a terminal in Dallas. The driver pulled over in front of a convenience store and told the passengers her allotted driving time was up and another driver was on the way. * The Hindu had published a New York Times article on February 7, 2008 (“Newscape” page, North India editions) headlined “Mahesh Yogi is dead”. The New York Times has issued a clarification that says: “News Service obituary about Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who introduced transcendental meditation to the West and gained fame as the spiritual guru to the Beatles, described incorrectly those who may bear the title of Maharishi, Hindi for ‘great seer,’ and misstated his own eligibility for it. The title may be bestowed on people of any caste, not only Brahmins. He was not ineligible because he was from a lower caste.” It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
