Opposition parties stall Assembly proceedings

Special Correspondent

Ruling alliance sticks to its guns on debate on naxal attack

Time not ripe for discussion: Speaker

Members nearly come to blows

BHUBANESWAR: No business was conducted in the Assembly on Tuesday with Opposition parties demanding a discussion on the naxal strike issue for the second day.

Members from the Opposition and the ruling parties nearly came to blows minutes after the House assembled in the morning. The proceedings had to be adjourned four times.

As the day began, Leader of the Opposition J.B. Patnaik stood up and wanted to know from Speaker Maheswar Mohanty about the discussion on the motion moved by the Opposition on the naxal issue.

In his reply the Speaker said the issue could be taken up later as the government was opposed to holding a discussion on the matter because the combing operation to track down the Maoists was still under way.

Meanwhile, legislators belonging to various parties rushed to the well and shouted slogans seeking a discussion on their motion.

Tense moments

Several members from the ruling parities too rushed into the well of the House when some Opposition legislators started arguing with Government Chief Whip Kishore Mohanty. Soon some members from both sides nearly came to blows forcing the Speaker to adjourn the proceedings for half an hour.

When the House reassembled, the Opposition members again rushed to the well and stalled the proceedings forcing another adjournment. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Raghunath Mohanty said the government was not averse to discussing the issue in the Assembly, but the same should be done after the operation against the Maoists was over. But the Opposition remained firm on its demand saying the issue was of public interest.

The proceedings were adjourned for the day as the Opposition stuck to its demand.
