School for mentally challenged gets own building

NAGAPTTINAM: As many as 3,961 physically challenged in the district have so far been provided livelihood support of Rs.10,000 each through Asian Development Bank assistance, said Tenkasi S. Jawahar, Collector, here on Monday after declaring open a school for the physically and mentally challenged built by the Rotary Club of Nagapattinam at a cost of Rs.3.25 lakh.
Mr. Jawahar pointed out that the Rotary Club had been running the school for the physically and mentally challenged in a rented building since 1996 and it had built the new building and providing education to 23 physically and mentally challenged.
The Rotary Club had already built and handed over 45 permanent houses for the tsunami victims at a cost of Rs.1.70 crore.
He said that the district administration had been giving priority for the welfare of physically and mentally challenged people and pointed out that on Monday 10 hearing aid equipments were provided free of cost to the deaf at a function.
In all, 17,375 physically challenged people in the district had been identified and issued identification cards by the Rehabilitation Department.
Officer-bearers of Rotary clubs, officials from Social Welfare and Rehabilitation departments and other officials attended the function.
