BHUBANESWAR: The government has sent a recommendation to the Ministry of Home Affairs to consider awarding Ashoka Chakra, the highest Indian military decoration during peacetime, to Assistant Commandant of Special Operation Group (SOG) Pramod Satpathy posthumously.

Assistant Commandant Satpathy laid down his life while flushing out armed Maoist rebels from their hideout in Gasama forest.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday wrote a letter to the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil describing as to how the SOG Assistant Commandant showed extraordinary valour during encounter with naxalites in the forest.

Leading two SOG teams, the brave police officer chased the naxalites, who carried out mayhem by killing 13 policemen and a civilian in Nayagarh town, and continued firing for about four hours due to which the rebels could not escape, Mr. Patnaik mentioned. It was the courageous resistance that resulted in the recovery of the huge amount of arms and ammunitions, he wrote.

Assistant Commandant Satpathy was instrumental in the formation of the SOG to combat growing menace of naxalism in the State. He underwent training for NSG Commando Course at Maneswar, Commanding Course at Hazaribag and weapon training course at BSF, Indore.
