Staff Correspondent

DAVANGERE: For the first time, the Bharatiya Janata Party has come to the power in Honnali Town Panchayat as party candidates K. Ningappa and Farzana Bhanu were elected president and vice-president respectively on Tuesday.

The BJP has a clear majority with nine members out of the total of 16. The Congress has just three seats. The Samajwadi Party has two seats while there are two independents in the panchayat. Meanwhile, the Janata Dal (Secular) has come to power in the Chennagiri Town Panchayat as party candidates Chikkappa and C. Pushpalatha were elected president and vice-president respectively. Mr. Chikkappa and independent candidate Rehamatulla had filed their nomination papers for the president’s post. But, Mr. Rehamatulla withdrew his papers. Ms. Pushpalatha was the lone candidate to have filed her nomination papers and was elected vice-president.
