New Delhi
NEW DELHI: His area of operation is not as widespread as that of Dr. Amit Kumar, the key accused in the multi-crore kidney transplant racket, but Gagendra Bhati - a quack working in East Delhi as an allopathic doctor - had a flourishing business and had even contested and won the Indian Medical Council North-East Delhi elections and served as its regional executive member last year. The Delhi Medical Council this month finally managed to put an end to his illegal business by sending him closure orders. Says DMC Deputy Registrar Girish Tyagi: “We got a complaint against Bhati last year and had started investigating the matter. Though he was working in Delhi, he told us that he had not registered here and had registered with the Rajasthan Medical Council. We wrote to the Rajasthan Medical Council to check on the information that was provided to us and found that it was false.” “Though we gave him time to produce his proper documents to ascertain if he was a qualified doctor, Bhati was unable to provide us with any documents. We have now asked him to close his hospital and stop taking patients,” adds Dr. Tyagi. Strict action sought“Without proper enforcement of law to ensure that quacks are unable to operate in the city, we have to struggle with such cases that put at stake the lives of innocent people. In this case, the accused had become so confident that he contested and won an election to become an IMA office-bearer. We demand that strict action be taken against quacks to ensure that the patients are safe,” said Anil Bansal, Convenor of the IMA Anti-Quackery Cell. “We are demanding that a case be registered against the accused so that proper action can be taken against him,” he added.
