Alleged attack on judicial officer by a group of lawyers New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday granted more time to leaders of the Bar in Chennai to arrive at a settlement in the dispute between the Egmore Bar and judicial officers over the alleged attack on a judicial officer by a group of lawyers. A Bench, comprising Justices P.P. Naolekar and L.S. Panta, adjourned hearing for a month on a special leave petition filed by advocate G. Elangovan against a Madras High Court order declining anticipatory bail to him. When Justice Naolekar wanted to know why there was delay in settling the issue, senior counsel M.N. Krishnamani, P.H. Parekh and Adish C. Agarwala, appearing for the petitioner, submitted that a meeting of the leaders of the bar and judicial officers, scheduled for the first week of February, could not be held due to unavoidable reasons. Efforts were on to hold talks at the earliest. They sought adjournment by four weeks. The Bench directed listing of the case after a month. According to the petitioner, cases were registered against 20 advocates in connection with an incident in the Egmore court on October 31, 2007. Though a complaint was also preferred against the magistrate concerned, no case was registered, he said. While 19 of them were granted anticipatory bail, his plea was dismissed by the Madras High Court on November 15, 2007. He prayed to the court to grant him anticipatory bail.
