Lok Janshakti Party activists protesting in New Delhi on Tuesday against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s “inability” to curb crime in the State. NEW DELHI: Lok Janshakti Party staged a demonstration at Jantar Mantar here on Tuesday to demand dismissal of the Mayawati Government in Uttar Pradesh. The demonstration was held in the wake of a call issued by the party’s president Ram Vilas Paswan in Noida on February 16 when he visited the family of Mohammad Ali, one of the victims in the Kasna triple murder case. Addressing the gathering, Lok Janshakti Party senior leader Syed Afzal Abbas said if the UP Government was not removed then the party would launch a nationwide agitation. Drawing attention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to increasing lawlessness in the State, Mr. Paswan in a letter described the incident as shocking. “Three young men -- Mohammad Yusuf (32), Shahabuddin (28) and Suresh Kumar (38) -- were shot dead on February 6 in broad daylight in the area under the Kasna “thana” in Gautam Budh Nagar, bordering the national Capital. I had visited the area on February 16 and interacted with the families of the deceased and other local people. I was informed that as per the FIR lodged by the relatives, the accused are the henchmen of a Minister in the U.P. Government,” said Mr. Paswan. Laying the blame squarely on the shoulders of the State Government, Mr. Paswan said it had failed to protect the lives of innocent persons, particularly those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and minority community. Demanding that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation, Mr. Paswan said: “Immediate action should be taken to book the culprits responsible for the heinous crime however high and mighty they might be. Since a Minister of the U.P. Government is involved, the local police is under pressure not to conduct an impartial investigation to get at the truth.”
