THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Representatives of the Association of Self-financing Engineering Colleges, who met Education Minister M.A. Baby here on Tuesday, demanded that the fee for government seats in their colleges be increased to at least Rs. 50,000 and the managements be allowed to collect fee ranging from Rs. 45,000 to Rs. 90,000 for seats in the management quota. G.P.C. Nayar, president of the association, and C.I. Abul Rahman, secretary, asked that the managements be allowed to collect a refundable deposit of Rs. 1.5 lakh from all students. Last year, the fee for the government seats was Rs. 38,700. The representatives said the government recently placed self-financing professional colleges in the commercial category for deciding electricity tariff. Moreover, these colleges had been brought under the purview of municipal tax and under the ESI scheme. More outgoThey colleges would now have to pay Rs. 12 lakh to Rs. 17 lakh as affiliation fee to various universities. All this meant an additional annual expenditure of close to Rs. 2 crore for self-financing colleges, which would be left with no option but to charge more from students.
