Road death: Court directs State to pay compensation

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Monday partly allowed a petition by the father of a motorcyclist who was killed in a road accident in Bangalore some years ago, and directed the State Government to pay a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh. Justice A.S. Bopanna passed the order on a petition by Captain R. Balasubramanian of Bangalore. In his petition, Mr. Balasubramanian said his son, Hari (34), died after he met with an accident in 2002. He said Hari and some of his friends had, on May 13, 2002, gone to Koramangala to dine at a restaurant. On his way back, Hari was hit by a vehicle at the junction of the 100 Feet Road in HAL and 12th Main Road at around 12.30 a.m. The vehicle which hit Hari sped away, leaving him bleeding on the road. Residents nearby called the police and two night beat policemen on duty also came to the spot. A little later, the then Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Bangalore, arrived. However, nobody thought of shifting Hari to hospital. Mr. Balasubramanian said that his son’s life could have been saved had the authorities acted promptly.

The city police said Hari had died on the spot and was brought dead to Bowring Hospital. Partly allowing the petition, Justice Bopanna ordered the State to pay the compensation.
