Tiger census calls for increased vigil

BANGALORE: Reacting to the findings of the tiger census released recently by Project Tiger, where it was found that there were a larger number of tigers in South India, Inspector General of Police (Forest Cell) K.S.N. Chikkerur said it would increase the responsibility of the cell in protecting the wild cats from poaching and other causes of death. He said there was likelihood of poachers increasingly targeting the forests of South India. “We will sharpen our vigil and protect tigers from being killed by poaching or poisoning,” he said, adding that the Forest Cell personnel will increase the frequency of visits to areas susceptible to poaching.
Mr. Chikkerur said the cell will shortly start sensitising district police, especially from Kodagu, Uttara Kannada and Belgaum, on the steps that need to be taken to protect the wild cats.
