PUDUKOTTAI: The Town branch of the Pudukottai District Central Co-operative Bank at Marthandapuram here has been catering to the needs of customers by working on Sundays, ever since its inception in December 1981.

Long before the introduction of high-tech devices in the banking industry, the branch started functioning for four hours daily including Sundays -- between 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

With the working hours of the branch suited to the office-goers, a large number of state government employees started shifting all their banking transactions to this branch.

The overwhelming response from the customers within a few months of its take-off, even made the PDCCB authorities to double the duration of transaction to eight hours a day, including Sundays. The bank has since been functioning 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the forenoon session and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. according to official sources.

The introduction of high-tech services including the Automated Teller Machine does not pose any challenge to the branch.

A couple of customers -- An employee of the Collectorate and a retired police constable – pointed out that the working hours of the branch was more suited to them. Its services on Sundays has made banking a pleasure for them.

The Joint Registrar and Special Officer of the PDCCB T. Ramanidevi said that the branch has extended the issue of jewel loans to the evening session too.
