NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a laboratory technician, Manoj, here in connection with the multicrore kidney transplant racket in Gurgaon. A city court on Tuesday remanded him to CBI custody till February 23. The agency said Manoj used to work in the clandestine operation theatre run by Amit Kumar, alleged kingpin in the racket, in Gurgaon Sector-23. Earlier, he worked as laboratory assistant in a small-time nursing home. A few months ago, he came in contact with the gang and started working for Dr. Kumar. It is alleged that he would lure people into donating their kidneys for monetary gain. Through Manoj, the CBI will try to trace the donors and other agents who worked for the gang. “Such a racket thrives mainly on the network of touts looking for potential donors,” said an official of the agency. Earlier last month, the Moradabad police arrested Pappu, Naushad, Gyasuddin and Jagdish, who, it was alleged, used to arrange for kidney donors. In another development, the Uttar Pradesh police have formally handed over the case registered in Moradabad to the CBI. “This would ensure expeditious investigations,” said the CBI official. About reports that medical examination of the complainant in the Moradabad case revealed that both his kidneys were intact, the official said even if the claim was true, it would not have any bearing on the investigations as long as they were based on evidence establishing the involvement of the accused in illegal transplants.
