South Zone veterans’ cricket tournament from today

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Cricket Veterans’ Association (TNCVA) will conduct the 10th annual South Zone inter-State tournament from February 20 to 23 here under the auspices of the Board for Veteran Cricket in India.

Speaking to newspersons here on Tuesday, P.R. Venkatsubramanian, Joint Secretary, TNCVA, said popular names such as Syed Kirmani, Raghuram Bhat, David Johnson, Kanwaljeet Singh and K.N. Ananthapadmanabhan will be taking part in the tournament, which will see participation from Andhra, Karnataka, Kerala, Hyderabad, Goa and Tamil Nadu.

Six teams have been divided into two groups and the top team from each group will compete in the final scheduled for February 23 at the RKM-Viveka on a 40-overs-a-side basis.

The league matches will be held at the SPIC-YMCA on a 30-overs-a-side basis.

The zonal winner will participate in the all-India knock-out tournament likely to be held in Kolkata or Kerala in April or May.

The all-India final will be shown live on Doordarshan.

S.B. Phoogeswaran’s unbeaten 126 helped CVRDE to victory in the LUCAS TVS-TDCA cricket Trophy for industrials recently.

Dhadeus nets winner

ICF beat RBI 1-0, in the CFA senior division football league, on Tuesday. Dhadeus headed in a cross from Ashok Kumar in the 35th minute.

In the first division, Rangoon defeated CPT 3-0. Karthikeyan scored in the fourth and 52nd minutes, while Vigneshwaran netted one in the 73rd minute.

Aishwarya on song

Aishwarya Agrawal (MP) blanked Rimple Deep Kaur (Punjab) 6-0, 6-0 in the girls’ under-16 pre-quarterfinals of the UC MAS-Singaram Pillai all-India junior tennis tournament here on Tuesday.
