Thiruvananthapuram: Work at the medical college hospital was unaffected except for some staff shortage. All shops, including the medical shops, small eateries and fruit stalls, were open. Private vehicles carrying patients had huge notices, announcing ‘Hospital,’ on the windshield. Auto-rickshaws plied as usual. The hospital staff on duty at casualty had a less taxing time till about 5 p.m. as cases were few. “The number of vehicles on the road was less. Naturally, we didn’t have many road accident cases today. On a regular day, we get over 200 serious cases in the casualty but today, the numbers dropped to almost one-third,” a hospital employee said. The out-patient clinics were also less crowded. The MCH authorities said that they collected some of their staff from home in ambulances but mostly, those who stayed far away adjusted duty with others. At the SAT hospital too, few casualty cases were reported.
