Thiruvananthapuram: The government has approved the Rs.10-crore master plan for the first phase of developing the Peroorkada Government Hospital as a model district hospital. The master plan, prepared jointly by Habitat and Hindustan Latex Ltd., was approved by a committee including Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy, Law Minister M. Vijayakumar, and Mayor C. Jayan Babu. The first phase of upgrading, including the construction of a four-storied building, is to be completed in 18 months. A chunk of the expenses – Rs.5 crore – is to be borne by HLL. The Peroorkada Service Cooperative Bank will provide Rs.1 crore. The rest of the investment required would be put together by the city Corporation, which is providing Rs.2 crore, the National Rural Health Mission funds, and contributions from the MP/MLA funds for local development. Though four floors are planned, only two floors – one for out-patient clinics and another for operation theatre and labour rooms – will be constructed for the time being
